BEYOND LANGUAGE (AU-DELÀ DE LA LANGUE) Canada, 2000, 24 min., Directed by Stephanie Finkelstein. In French, English, and Yiddish with English subtitles Friday, June 19th 11 AM With Stephanie Finkelstein This short film, made by Stephanie Finkelstein as her final film at the Communication Studies Department at Concordia University, portrays the flourishing Dora Wasserman Yiddish Theatre and its close collaboration with the French community in Montreal, a relationship first established when Yiddish troupes performed at the Monument National at the end of the 19th century. Winner of the Best Student Documentary Award at the 24th Montreal World Film Festival. FREE Film but you must reserve with the box office.

SHTIK! DRAMATURGY AND IMPROVISATION WORKSHOPS
with Warren Rosenzweig & Guenther Schoeller of the Jewish Theatre of Austria
Friday June 19 at 12:30 PM and Saturday June 20 at 4 PM. Workshop in English.

This workshop will introduce a unique method of dramaturgic analysis of new works through sight reading, extemporaneous performance, and group discussion. Depending on the casting requirements for each play, participation may include a minimum of 12 to a maximum of 40 people.

Participants will read the play, Drummond Street Jewish Life Down Under by Alex Dafner and Leon Gettler, about the life of post-WWII Yiddish speakers in Melbourne, Australia.

Yiddish Songs and Stories for children aged 2 - 6 and their parents and/or grandparents. Accompanied by an English narrative, kids (of all ages!) will sing, dance, clap, march and listen their way through classic Yiddish songs as well as Yiddish versions of popular children's favourites.

DIBBOUK? "SKOUN ADA?"! (The Dybbuk, "What's That?") Sunday, June 21st, 12 :30 (in French) A play retracing a Jewish theatre workshop, written and directed by Sonia Sarah Lipsyc. An original play retracing the discovery of Yiddish theatre and the An-ski play The Dybbuk by 15 members of the Jewish theatre workshop that took place once a week in the past trimester. Sonia Sarah Lipsyc is the Artist in Residence at the Segal Center and director of ALEPH - a Centre for contemporary Jewish studies at the Communauté Sépharade Unifiée du Québec (CSUQ). Musical direction by Hélène Engel. Paintings by Ludmilla Fischman.

Son of an Argentine Yiddish actor, Rafael is highly trained in theatre, academic studies and speaks many languages. He studied with Le Coq.

Explore the city's Yiddish cultural history through a selection of original photographs, brilliant theatre posters and unique ephemera. From the stage of the Monument National to the stacks of the Jewish Public Library, Montreal continues to celebrate Yiddish theatre! The curtain is up on the exhibit from June 15-26, 2009, in the foyer of the Cummings Building.
